Amethyst
Amethyst is the most treasured member of the quartz family — its violet arises from traces of iron and natural radiation in the rock. At Mohs 7 it is fit for daily wear, and its value makes large, colour-rich stones attainable.
The main deposits are Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia, where amethyst grows in geodes and veins. Zambian stones are known for their deep, faintly reddish violet.
Value follows the saturation and evenness of colour — deep violet without a grey cast stands at the top. In quartz, inclusions are more visible; fine stones are eye-clean. A clean cut lets the colour glow from full depth.
Amethyst accompanies February. Its name comes from the Greek (“amethystos” — the un-intoxicated); since antiquity it has stood for clarity and sober judgement and still adorns bishops’ rings.
Easy to care for: lukewarm soapy water, a soft brush. Avoid strong, permanent sunlight, which can lighten the colour over time.
Only with years of intense sunlight can the violet lighten. In everyday life the colour remains stable.
Saturation, clarity and origin: deep-violet, eye-clean stones from Zambia or Uruguay fetch noticeably more than pale material.
