Kunzite
Kunzite is a young gemstone: first described at the beginning of the 20th century and named after the gemmologist George Frederick Kunz. Its delicate pink to lilac tones come from the trace element manganese; large, clean crystals are its strength.
The finest crystals come from Afghanistan, Pakistan (Nuristan), Brazil and Madagascar. Kunzite is a variety of spodumene and often grows into stately, well-formed prisms.
Even, saturated pink to lilac tones are sought. Kunzite is pleochroic — it shows different colour intensities from different angles, and the cut is oriented accordingly. Faceted top quality with even colour is rare and usually untreated.
A stone of the modern age: kunzite is seen as a sign of calm and new affection — and as an “evening stone”, because its colour sits most beautifully in soft light.
Avoid knocks and pressure (Mohs 6.5–7) and prolonged, intense sunlight, which can weaken the colour over time. Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water.
Long, intense UV exposure can weaken the pink and lilac tones. Jewellery with kunzite should not be worn or stored permanently in the sun.
Large rough crystals are well known; rare are faceted stones with even, rich colour — precisely such stones our master cutter selects.
