Tourmaline
Few mineral groups show more colours than tourmaline — from watermelon pink with a green rim to the vivid turquoise of paraíba tourmaline. At Mohs 7 to 7.5 it is a versatile companion for everyday wear.
The main deposits lie in Brazil, Mozambique, Nigeria, Madagascar and Afghanistan. Paraíba tourmaline — owing its colours to copper — ranks among the most coveted and valuable gems in the world.
Tourmaline lives by colour: multicoloured crystals (bi-colour, “watermelon”) are natural masterpieces, not treatment tricks. Clarity and price vary widely by variety; many tourmalines come without any treatment — treatments are disclosed.
Tourmaline accompanies October and is considered a stone of creativity and inspiration. Traditionally it belongs to the 8th wedding anniversary.
Lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush; ultrasonic only for unfilled stones. Avoid knocks.
A copper-bearing variety with neon-like turquoise to green tones, first discovered in Brazil. It ranks among the rarest and most valuable gems of all.
Because within one crystal a pink core is enclosed by a green rim — a natural colour play the cut reveals.
