Peridot
Peridot is a gemstone with deep roots: some 3,500 years ago it was recovered on the Egyptian island of Zabargad — and occasionally it even arrives on Earth with meteorites. Its vivid olive green is matched by no other mineral in this purity.
Peridot is olivine from the earth’s mantle. Historically famous are Egypt and Myanmar; today fine stones come chiefly from Arizona (USA), China and Pakistan.
The tone ranges from yellowish green to deep olive — the less iron, the brighter the stone glows. Fine peridots are eye-clean, and almost all reach the market untreated: an exception among coloured gems.
Peridot belongs to August and was regarded by the pharaohs as a stone of the sun that keeps night spirits at bay. It is traditionally given on the 16th wedding anniversary.
Sensitive to acids: keep perfume and household cleaners away and never use ultrasonic cleaners. Lukewarm water and a soft cloth suffice.
Usually not — peridot almost always reaches the market untreated. That makes it one of the most honest choices among coloured gemstones.
Peridot crystals have indeed been found in meteorites (pallasites). Commercial material, of course, comes from the Earth — space remains a curiosity.
