Ruby
Few gemstones are as bound to passion as the ruby — the red member of the corundum family and one of the hardest gems of all (Mohs 9). A saturated red like the coveted “pigeon blood” tone arises only when traces of chromium are woven into the crystal. Every ruby in our range is hand-selected and cut in our own lapidary.
Ruby is corundum — crystallised aluminium oxide — its red born from the trace element chromium. Significant deposits lie in Myanmar, Mozambique, Thailand, Tanzania and Sri Lanka, where the crystal has grown over millions of years in metamorphic rock.
Value follows colour and saturation first, then clarity and cut. Inclusions are normal in rubies — what matters is that they do not dim the fire. A precise, symmetrical cut lets the red light play at full strength. Mere heating to improve colour is customary in the trade and disclosed; untreated stones are rarer and graded accordingly higher.
The ruby is July’s stone and has stood since antiquity for courage, dignity and ardent affection — the crown jewels of several royal houses carry it. For the 40th wedding anniversary it is the classic gift.
With a Mohs hardness of 9 the ruby is fit for everyday wear. Lukewarm water and a soft brush are enough; store separately from harder stones. Skip ultrasonic cleaners for fracture-filled stones.
Colour first: a saturated, vivid red without a brown or blue cast. Then clarity and cut. Origin can additionally influence the price.
A classic, permanent colour-enhancing method that is standard in the trade and disclosed by us. Untreated rubies are considerably rarer and graded higher.
