Tanzanite
Tanzanite exists in only one place on Earth: the Merelani Hills at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Discovered as late as 1967, the violet-sheened zoisite is today one of the most coveted gemstones — and is considered a stone of a generation, for its source is finite.
The only commercial deposit lies in Tanzania. The stone owes part of its fame to Tiffany & Co., which introduced it in 1968 and named it after its home country.
Tanzanite is strongly pleochroic — from different directions it shows blue, violet and red-brown. The cut decides which side wins. From the mountain the zoisite usually arrives brownish; heating creates the famous blue hue — established and disclosed.
Tanzanite belongs to the December stones and stands for the extraordinary — traditionally given on the 24th wedding anniversary.
Mohs 6.5–7 and distinct cleavage: avoid knocks and ultrasonic cleaners. Lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth are the right care.
The only known deposit lies in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. The supply is finite — a circumstance that makes the stone so special.
From the ground the stone usually arrives brownish-violet. Controlled heating creates the blue hue — an established, permanent and disclosed treatment.
