Turquoise
Turquoise is one of humanity’s oldest gemstones — Egypt wore it some 5,000 years ago, the Aztecs held it sacred, and Persian stones from Nishapur remain the benchmark to this day. Its sky blue comes from copper, its greens from iron.
Important finds lie in Iran, the USA (Arizona — the famous “Sleeping Beauty” mine), China and Egypt. Turquoise forms in the weathering zones of copper-rich rock.
The spectrum runs from pure sky blue to greenish blue. The dark veins of the matrix make every piece unmistakable. As natural turquoise is porous it is often stabilised — a common, disclosed treatment that makes the stone fit for daily wear.
Turquoise accompanies December and is regarded in many cultures as a protective amulet and stone of friendship — a sign to wear and to pass on.
Porous and sensitive: keep perfume, cream and cosmetics away (apply turquoise last, take it off first), no ultrasonic, no steam. Care for it with a dry, soft cloth.
Natural turquoise is porous and reacts to skincare and sweat. Stabilisation with colourless resin makes it practical for daily life — a standard, disclosed practice.
The dark veins are remnants of the parent rock. Whether they are prized or a pure blue preferred is a matter of taste — both have their collectors.
